Restoring Historic Spiral Stair Treads in a Liverpool Church

Not every job is straightforward — and not every floor is flat. This project took us into the heart of a historic Liverpool church, where we were asked to restore the worn sandstone spiral staircase used for over 150 years by choir members and organists.

The original steps were deeply worn and uneven from generations of use. The church wanted a solution that would respect the original character of the building while improving safety and providing a long-lasting finish.

Our Approach

We began by mechanically abrading the worn stair treads to create a clean, keyed surface for bonding. We then applied ACL-Prime TC, a specialist primer that ensures proper adhesion even in challenging substrates like aged stone.

Next, we used ACL-Screed HD, a high-density, durable resin screed, to re-profile each step — giving them a smoother, flatter surface that remains in keeping with the surrounding sandstone.

To complete the job, we carefully measured, cut, and installed brass edging to each riser. This detail was both functional and decorative, adding a touch of visual clarity for safety without compromising the church’s aesthetic.

Why It Matters

This wasn’t just a staircase. It was part of a living building, steeped in history. Our team worked with care and sensitivity to preserve the feel of the original stone while introducing modern performance and safety improvements.

The end result blends seamlessly into the space — and will continue serving the church and community for decades to come.
